Sundance Circle Hippotherapy: Adaptive Riding Lessons
Located in Sumner Washington, Sundance Circle Hippotherapy also provides adaptive riding lessons.
What Are Adaptive Riding Lessons?
Adaptive riding is recreational riding lessons for individuals who have additional needs and therefore benefit from a riding lesson that takes those needs into account. These lessons are taught by a PATH International fully certified instructor.
What Does An Adaptive Riding Lesson Look Like?
Adaptive lessons are designed with the individual's needs in mind. Lessons plans take into account the rider's strength, balance, coordination, and communication abilities. The horse's movement imparts many therapeutic benefits both physically and emotionally. Classes involve movements on the horse, games, control of the horse around the arena. As with hippotherapy, riders have a team around them but are able to progress at a pace that suits their own needs and abilities.
Who Can Benefit?
A whole range of people can benefit from adaptive riding lessons, some have single diagnoses, some multiple. Although this list is certainly not exhaustive, diagnoses can include:
- ADHD
- Autism
- Cerebral Palsy
- Downs Syndrome
- Developmental Delay
- Spinal Cord Injury
- PTSD
- Head Injury
- Stroke
- Visual or Hearing Impairment
- Emotional or Behavioral Issues
- At-Risk Youth
Instructor
Adaptive riding lessons are taught by our PATH International Certified Instructor Maddy DeMaris, CTRI, BA.

She has worked at horse camps with multiple horses and children and competed in Polo at college level. As well as teaching on our adaptive program, Maddy is the barn manager at Sundance Circle Hippotherapy. She knows the horses fantastically well, which enables her to flawlessly match horses to riders. Maddy is passionate about adaptive riding and says:
"I love helping people gain a level of riding skills and independence that they can use throughout their riding career, and transfer into their daily life."
