What Are Adaptive Riding Lessons?
Adaptive riding is recreational horseback riding or horsemanship lessons for individuals who have additional physical, mental, or emotional needs and therefore benefit from a riding lesson that takes those needs into account. All of our adaptive riding lessons are one-on-one with the instructor.
What Does An Adaptive Riding Lesson Look Like?
Adaptive lessons are designed with the individual's needs in mind. Lesson plans take into account the rider's strength, balance, coordination, and communication abilities. The horse's movement imparts many therapeutic benefits both physically and emotionally. Classes may involve movements on the horse, games, grooming/tacking, and groundwork with the horse. Groundwork may include obstacle negotiation and pattern work. As with hippotherapy, riders may have a team of volunteers including a horse lead and sidewalkers, around them as needed, to allow a safe and comfortable environment to grow and progress at a pace that suits their own needs and abilities.
Who are adaptive riding lessons for?
Anyone interested in learning horsemanship skills who needs one-on-one instruction with the instructor due to the need for physical and/or cognitive assistance. Some examples of diagnoses we commonly see are: ADHD, ASD, anxiety, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, downs syndrome, PTSD, visual/hearing impairment, at-risk youth, etc.
What is mounted versus unmounted adaptive riding lessons?
Mounted includes horseback riding skills in addition to groundwork, grooming, and tacking skills. Unmounted focused on horsemanship skills such as groundwork, grooming, and tacking, without the involvement of horseback riding. Unmounted is a good option for anyone interested in learning horsemanship skills but is fearful of horseback riding or exceeds the weight limit for mounted adaptive riding lessons.
What is the weight limit?
For the safety of our herd, our current weight limit for mounted adaptive riding lessons is 160 pounds. There is no weight limit for unmounted adaptive riding lessons.
Does insurance cover adaptive riding lessons?
Unfortunately not. Adaptive riding lessons are classified as a recreational activity, therefore not covered by medical insurance.
What is the cost?
Mounted adaptive riding lessons are $55/session, and unmounted adaptive riding lessons are $35/session. All adaptive riding lessons also include a month barn fee that goes directly towards the care of the horses. The monthly barn fee for mounted lessons is $200/month, and unmounted lessons is $100/month.
