Physical Therapy

Types of Physical Therapy at Sundance

Hippotherapy

Hippotherapy is occupational therapy utilizing equine movement. Our licensed physical therapist and physical therapy assistant combine physical therapy knowledge and techniques utilizing the equine movement and the equine environment to help you/your child reach your physical therapy goals. The horse’s rhythmic, multidimensional movement is used to facilitate improvements in posture, balance, core strength, coordination, gait mechanics, and overall motor control.

Unmounted Therapy

Unmounted physical therapy sessions use the barn environment and horse to support functional PT goals without riding. Clients work on balance, strength, coordination, mobility, endurance, and confidence through purposeful activities on the ground alongside and around horses. This approach is ideal for individuals who are over the allowed riding weight limit, have a fear of riding, or benefit more from working on skills at ground level.

Who might benefit from PT at Sundance?

Anyone who benefits from physical therapy! Do you find yourself and your child spending too much time spent in hospitals, classrooms, doctors offices? Perhaps your child is burnt out from therapy or doesn't tolerate clinic therapy? Do they need a new environment, more time outdoors, and the calming effects of animals? Then your child may need hippotherapy! We see kids 3 years old and up, including adolescents and adults! The equine environment and experience helps improve balance, postural reactions, and gross strength. The unique environment of the outdoors, the barn/arena, and horses promotes engagement and enhances motivation, making it an effective and enjoyable therapy option for those seeking to improve their daily living skills and overall quality of life. While we see a wide variety of medical diagnosis and this is not an all inclusive list, a few examples that benefit greatly include: cerebral palsy, down syndrome, genetic abnormalities, low-tone, high-tone, developmental delay, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, post-stroke, autism, and so much more!

Sessions are billed under physical therapy codes to your insurance, covered by insurance similarly to clinic physical therapy. Hippotherapy can, and often should, be in conjunction with clinic physical therapy in order to complement and maximize progress towards physical therapy goals.
